Huntington College Haunting

• April 26th, 2010

This week Podcasting the Paranormal explores a long-standing legend that exists just south from Auburn University in Montgomery, AL at Huntington College. Huntington College has been voted one of the top 10 most haunted college campuses nation-wide based on it's paranormal experiences, and since this spooky spot is just around the corner it's only natural to go check it out for ourselves.

I went down to the college to speak with students about the legend and if they had any encounters with paranormal activity during their time at Huntington.

According to common stories told by students, Pratt Dormitory on Huntington College's campus has been a haunted hot-spot for years. Student's told me the campus dormitory is persistently visited by a ghostly spirit known as the "Red Lady." Apparently the "Red Lady" was a shy, lonely student named Martha. In spite of the many attempts to make friends at Huntington, Martha was constantly made fun of for her odd personality and strange obsession with the color red.

One day, Martha had enough of the cruelty, went up to her dorm room in Pratt Hall, cut her wrists, and disappeared. The only think left to remember Martha by was the red blood coating the Pratt Hall Dormitory from floor to ceiling. As expected, the entire student-life was shaken by the recent tragedy at the campus, however, little did they know "The Red Lady" would haunt Huntington College for years to come, seeking revenge for those who did not chose to be Martha's friend.

I spoke with Huntington Junior, Mike Wells, who shares his chilling story about the adventure him and his friends took to Pratt Dormitory one evening. Let me say, words can't describe the feeling Mike explained when he saw what was inside the dorm room.

In spite of Mike's unique experience, some student's at Huntington argued that ghosts have not been present on their campus and the entire ghost story is an extreme fabrication. Sara Lee White, a freshman at Huntington College, claims she has no immediate fear or reason to believe ghosts exists in the Pratt Dorm.

Searching for Spirits at Spring Villa Mansion

• April 10th, 2010

Thank you for tuning-in to the second episode of "Podcasting the Paranormal." If you missed episode one, be sure to listen before you begin this current episode. In the previous episode we had the opportunity to get to know our ghost-busting partners-in-crime, the Alabama Paranormal Research Team.

Now if you are caught up, we can finally get to the exciting part. In this episode we will explore haunted happenings reported just outside Auburn, Alabama. Beyond the backroads, deep into the woods lies the historic, Spring Villa Mansion.

In this podcast I had the opportunity to meet with Spring Villa's groundskeeper, John Porkenroy, who tells us the haunted legends that exists within the mansion. According to Porkenroy, back in the 1850's, the owner of the Mansion, Penn Yongue, was a cruel slave owner. As the legends has it, one night as Mr. Yongue walked up the stairs to his bedroom, his slave hid in a cubby hole in the staircase, came up behind him and stabbed Mr. Yongue to his death. To this day, people claim there is paranormal activity within the mansion and throughout the property of Spring Villa. So this is where the Alabama Paranormal Research Team comes in.

During this episode, the APRT will walk us through a case-study of Spring Villa Mansion. They will even take us upstairs to the most paranormal active location in the Mansion and see if we can catch some ghosts. To find out what happens, keep listening to "Podcasting the Paranormal."

Podcasting the Paranormal- Episode 1: Meet the APRT

• April 3rd, 2010

Hello & Welcome to Podcasting the Paranormal. My name is Carrie Williams. Throughout this podcast series, I will be your host and friendly neighborhood ghostbuster.

Before I jump into the discussion about episode 1, I'd like to briefly introduce myself and my interest in creating this podcast. My name is Carrie, I am a senior at Auburn University majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science. I've always been intrigued by ghost stories and the paranormal. Whether paranormal activity exists or not, I believe there must be something more after life. You hear about haunted houses and people witnessing ghosts in random locations, well if these accounts are true, then there must be a logical explanation that after-life paranormal activity exists.

As a journalist interested in uncovering the paranormal, I decided to take my interest a step further. Last Halloween, I contacted the Alabama Paranormal Research Team in hopes of covering a news story on haunted locations in the Auburn area. Although My initial purpose in covering this story was for entertainment value, after one weekend spent working on a case-study with the APRT, my entire perspective changed. I gained an entirely new outlook and respect for paranormal research, and decided to broaden my scope of interests throughout the Chattahoochee Valley area to explore haunted legends.

In this episode, I will introduce you to the group of ghost chasers who will take us through haunted locations and provide in-depth, professional case studies. To give you some background on the team, The APRT is a non-profit research group based out of South-East Alabama. Their research is composed mainly of paranormal hot spots around the state and of the history behind an area known to have paranormal activity. The APRT has experiences investigating homes, establishments and locations throughout the state of Alabama.

The first member of the team is the founder and director of the Alabama Paranormal Research Team, Faith Serafin. The others key figures to the team are Michelle Smith, researcher and investigator; Michael Donaldson, the team’s technical operator; and John Marc Poe, historian.”

To find out more about the members of The Alabama Paranormal Research Team, listen to episode 1 of “Podcasting the Paranormal,” and be sure to stay tuned for episode 2 where myself and the APRT will take you inside the haunted legend of Spring Villa Mansion.
